Future Trends in Developing Multimedia Information Systems - Competencies and Methodologies

Information systems are getting more and more multimedia-based as well as network-based. Clear examples of this trend are various Internet applications for areas such as: business, education and entertainment. This evolution together with the generally increasing change rate in organisations and society pose new demands on methodologies and competencies required for developing future multimedia information systems for the Internet. In this paper, multimedia systems development is regarded as comprising the parallel processes of software engineering as well as content development and project management. The process appears to be a multidisciplinary effort requiring cooperation of people from many different backgrounds with their own specific competencies, methodologies and views of the world. The paper concludes that a large variety of competencies will be required for developing the future multimedia information systems because of their multidisciplinary nature.
